One steamy day that summer, Mama Quin was behind the counter chatting with SNCC worker Jane Adams. Perhaps they were talking about the most recent house or church bombed in McComb, or reports of another local arrest. It might have been because Jane was anxious as a young White woman in the movement, or maybe Mama Quin demonstrated her fearlessness to folks more frequently as a show of strength and comfort. Mama Quin reached into her ample bosom and pulled out a small pistol and smiled. “And I’m happy on the trigger,” she said. Jane saw the metal glint in the sunlight streaming through the narrow windows and then it disappeared back from where it came. It was clear that those in the Black community felt that they had no choice but to protect themselves.
